First Nations Housing Memorandum of Understanding
Poor housing is a root contributor to the other social and economic disparities faced by First Nations – a lack of adequate housing leads to poor outcomes in health, education, and employment. 26% of First Nations living on reserve in Canada are living in an overcrowded house, and 25% reside in homes that require major repairs. 44% of houses of on reserve are in need of major repair. One in three homeless people in BC is Aboriginal.
To address these dismal statistics, First Nations in BC (through the political organizations of the First Nations Summit, BC Assembly of First Nations, and Union of BC Indian Chiefs) and the Governments of Canada and BC negotiated a First Nations Housing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Signed on May 21, 2008, the MoU commits the Parties to collaboratively develop interlinked on and off reserve housing strategies with particular focus on the areas of: Governance; Relationships and Accountability; Financial Management; Capacity Development; and, Comprehensive Approach to Housing. A Technical Committee composed of representatives of each of the Parties is responsible for the overseeing the implementation of the MoU.
